Project Overview
Bundaberg Brewed Drinks [BBD] is an Australian beverage producer known for its range of brewed soft drinks. As part of its international supply chain, the company transports beverage concentrate from Australia to manufacturing and filling facilities around the world.
Bundaberg has used SpaceKraft Cardboard IBCs for this application for more than ten years. The containers provide a bulk packaging format suited to long-distance transport and are cost effective to deliver to a regional Australian manufacturing site. They are ideal to use with BBD’s aseptic filling process and for transporting in a refrigerated container due to the unique 835 litre capacity version fitting in the narrower space.
SpaceKraft Cardboard IBCs for Beverage Concentrate
SpaceKraft Cardboard IBCs combine a high-strength corrugated outer container with an internal liner that holds the liquid. The beverage concentrate comes into contact with the liner rather than the cardboard structure.
The outer container is made using a seamless, multi-layer construction designed to withstand the compression forces involved in bulk liquid storage and transport. It is used with an appropriately rated pallet, lid and strapping system to create a complete transport package.
Different liner configurations are available according to the product and filling process. Factors such as liquid density, required barrier properties, filling temperature and discharge method need to be considered before the liner and fittings are selected.
For Bundaberg Brewed Drinks, the complete system allows beverage concentrate to be filled in Australia, transported internationally and discharged into the bottling process at the receiving facility. Once the concentrate has been removed, the liner and cardboard outer can be separated and managed according to the waste and recycling facilities available at the destination. There is no need to arrange the return of an empty rigid container to the original production site.
More Than Ten Years of Continued Use
Bundaberg Brewed Drinks’ use of SpaceKraft for more than a decade reflects continued application across many international shipments and destinations. Over this period, the cardboard IBC format has remained part of the company’s beverage concentrate export programme due to its ability to meet their product’s need to be transported refrigerated while maximising utilisation of the shipping container.
Conclusion
Bundaberg Brewed Drinks’ experience demonstrates how cardboard IBCs can support the international movement of beverage concentrate over the long term.
