Case study: Short-wave infrared heater solution for Port Adelaide Enfield [PAE] City Depot

Space Assessment

Port Adelaide Enfield [PAE] City Depot is a typical council workshop where Council vehicles and equipment are maintained and repaired. This facility features high ceilings, large open floor spaces and often the large roller doors are open making the whole work area cold in winterPAE Council made a commitment to reduce its carbon footprint and as a result decided to increase solar power generation and totally phase out gas heating. The workshop had traditionally been heated with overhead gas radiant heaters, some of which were no longer operating. The gas heaters were mounted at a minimum of 4m from the floor on droppers to avoid collision with vehicles.

Solution: Short-wave infrared heaters for warehouse

SBH Solutions was asked to provide a solution which could deal with the height constraint and provide heat to set workstations in the most efficient manner.  We tailored a solution utilising 2kW single and 4kW double Helios Titan Short-wave Infrared Heaters. Unlike other traditional infrared heating systems, short-wave infrared is an energy-efficient heating option, as it emits high-intensity heat directly through the air to targeted areas. When the heater is turned on, it instantly forms a ‘comfortable heat zone’ that is resilient to disruptions caused by air currents or open doors, making it the best solution to replace the traditional gas heaters.

Heating efficiency using insulated heater jackets is a combination of power input, distribution of this power, and the amount of heat that can be contained from escaping to warm the surrounding environment.  Drum heaters designed with high-grade thermal insulation result in safer heat distribution that enhances both performance and the equipment’s lifespan, particularly at higher temperatures.

Why Choose Titan Short Wave Infrared Heaters?

The Helios Titan range, manufactured by the leading European manufacturer, Star Progetti, is designed for industrial environments. Each unit in the range has passed rigorous safety and reliability tests, ensuring that they meet Australian market standards.

Titan infrared heaters utilise short-wave infrared technology that emits radiant heat energy through the air to directly warm objects, similar to the sun’s rays. This technology localises heat that focuses where it’s needed rather than the entire area. As there is no reliance on air movement, it is particularly well-suited to dusty or micro-particle heavy environments.

Why use short-wave infrared heater for high ceilings areas?

To maximise energy efficiency and cost saving, our Helios Titan heaters are equipped with specially patented parabolic reflectors, enabling maximum area coverage with fewer units. This design feature is particularly beneficial in expansive industrial spaces where efficient heating distribution is crucial. The heaters utilise InfraCalor® Bulbs, known for their longevity—providing up to 7,000 hours of operation (dependent upon usage). Additionally, all bulbs are replaceable, ensuring minimal downtime with replacements readily available from our stock.

Result

The installation of the Titan range of short-wave infrared heaters has improved the comfort level within the workshop. It has enhanced worker productivity while reducing overall energy costs. It has allowed PAE Council to make significant progress towards its stated goal of reducing reliance on fossil fuels. This transformation demonstrates that targeted, efficient heating solutions for large-scale industrial environments in the 21st century is possible without the use of gas.
