EX Zone space and process Heating
EHSAFE – The Most Effective Electric Heater For ATEX Environment
Short-wave Infrared Heating for Ex Rated Spaces
Ex-rated areas—such as chemical plants, fuel storage sites, spray booths, and agricultural facilities that handle flammable materials — require heating solutions that are both safe and reliable. Conventional heaters that warm the air are often not suitable in these environments or have to be modified in order to meet stringent global Standards.
As the ONLY ATEX-certified infrared heater, Helios EH SAFE has been designed from the ground up to meet European Ex Standards for Zone 2 and Zone 22 up to T2. It is used as a space heater in areas such as:
- Maintenance and work bays in fuel or chemical depots
- Storage rooms for flammable paints or chemicals
- Equipment stations where freeze protection is required
- Spray painting areas, boatyards, timber processing workshops
- Zones with oil residue, dust, or solvent vapours
EHSafe is IP66 rated so is also used in areas where it’s certification does not matter but its robustness and ability to work safely in dusty and wet conditions are of foremost importance.

Why use Helios Short-wave Infrared Heating in an Ex Environment?
No wasted energy
Radiant heat only warms where it’s needed, even if areas are open or spaces are partially exposed to the elements.
Flexibility
Helios heating system can localise heat into different zones, allowing precise control of heating needs in different spaces.
Easy to install & low maintenance
Units can be wall or ceiling-mounted and offer a long lifespan of up to 7,000 hours, delivering significant savings in both time and cost.
Durable & Safe in Tough Farm Conditions
ATEX-certificated heaters available for humid, washdown, or bio-sensitive areas.

Using Short-wave Infrared Heaters for Ex Environment
The Helios EHSAFE20AL 2kW short-wave infrared heater is designed specifically for use in hazardous areas zoned 2 or 22. It is currently the only ATEX-approved infrared heater in the world. It delivers immediate radiant heat to people and surfaces without relying on air circulation, reducing the risk of heat loss or ignition. This makes it suitable for spaces where ventilation or regular airflow would normally affect heating performance.
Because it doesn’t heat the air, there’s little heat dispersion. The warmth stays where it’s needed. The heater runs with high efficiency—converting nearly all of the electricity used into direct heat—cutting energy waste and helping reduce running costs by up to 70%. With a lamp life of up to 5,000 hours and no moving parts, the unit also requires very little maintenance.

Short-wave Infrared Heating Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do short-wave infrared heaters work?
Our heaters emit focused infrared radiation that directly heats objects and people within their range. This quick and efficient heating process ensures that you feel warmth instantly, making them ideal for outdoor and large open indoor spaces.
Short-wave means that there is no need to pre-heat a space and often these heaters are operated with timers or proximity sensors for maximum cost savings. However, to achieve maximum benefit it is necessary to place heaters at workstations rather than trying to heat the total space. This way you can cut heating costs dramatically because unheated areas will be much cooler.
How easy is it to install and operate short-wave infrared heaters?
Short-wave infrared heaters are easy to install and can be configured as fixed units or portable systems (with infrared heater stands). With EHSAFE, the heater is certified to ATEX on a wall bracket. If it is used in any other way, certification does not apply but it can be used as IP66 rated (dust proof and weather proof) heater.
What maintenance is required for Helios ATEX heating systems?
Minimal maintenance is required. Regularly checking the heating elements and ensuring proper electrical connections help maintain performance and longevity. Periodic cleaning of the glass of the EHSAFE will keep performance as highest level.
What and how many heaters do I need?
The quantity of the heater you need depends on project dimensions, insulation quality, and specific heating requirements. We offer energy-efficient short wave infrared heaters in various wattages and coverage areas.
